While hunting on Mount Cithaeron, Actaeon had the misfortune to happen upon Artemis as she was bathing in a stream. Incensed at the intrusion, the goddess turned Actaeon into a stag, and drove his hounds into a frenzy. The hunter, now the hunted, fled, with his former companions in pursuit. The hounds eventually caught up with their master turned quarry, and summarily tore him to pieces.
