Pegasus, Son Of Medusa

12” X 17”

SOLD

When Perseus struck Medusa’s head from her body, Pegasus and his brother Chrysaor emerged amid the chaos of her fellow gorgons, Euryale and Stheno, raging at the fleeing hero. Eventually, following the guidance of Athena, the hero Bellerophon enlisted his help to kill the fire breathing Chimera, a request imposed upon him by the Lycean king Iobetes, one of many tasks engineered with the hope that Bellerophon wouldn’t survive it’s undertaking. The winged steed’s ability to fly proved to be Bellerophon’s key to victory, and ironically, the key to his ruin, when in a bout of hubris, he attempted flight to Olympus. Zeus sent a gadfly to bite the horse, who was startled enough to throw the hero from his back. While the once great man lived out his days hobbled and humbled, Pegasus entered into the service of Zeus, and was honored to carry thunder for the king of the Gods. At the end of his life, he was set among the stars.
