When King Oenus of Calydon failed to make sacrifice to Artemis, she sent a great and monstrous boar to ravage his land, crops, and anyone who found themselves in the beast’s path. Calydon’s people cowered behind the walls of their city, and Oenus offered the hide and tusks of the boar to whoever was able to kill it.
