When Cronos castrated his father Uranus, blood fell upon the earth, and the Furies were born, Alecto, Tisiphone and Megaera. Dog headed, snake haired, bat winged and draped in funerary shrouds, wielding notched scourges and torches burning with an infernal flame, these chthonic spirits of vengeance, the Furies relentlessly persecuted those who violated the natural order, particularly those who committed crimes against their own kin, and those that harmed their guests.
